Sugarcookie asked:

We have been remodeling our home and now it is time to decorate it. Everything I like is out of our budget. Anyone have any tips, websites, stores, etc. to get a big look for little money.

Thanks
We have wood floors, ceramic tile, and carpeting throughout, all about 6 months old. I have also painted all the walls (no white here!) I just need some tips for decorating with accessories on a tight budget, as the majority of the money was spent on the actual contruction, flooring, trim, and new furniture.

If you have the time thrift stores, and yard sales and ebay might do the trick. You just have to look.
If you can sew a little you could do drapes & slip covers or pillow covers. Fabrics are on sale right now too. And you can add a valance to make it look special and tiebacks of same/contrasting colors or design. In our area the dollar stores carry less expensive rods and curtains, bedspreads, etc. that are not that bad really.
Sometimes repainting a piece of furniture works well too.
On a budget things will take longer, but you can put together a totally “you” look and after all your house is for you not your neighbors/friends. Good Luck & Have Fun [who]

I would have never said this a few years ago because I thought thrift stores were for homeless people but by stopping in one for a Halloween costume I discovered so many treasures. Check them out! [who]

Decide on a color scheme and use paint to enliven your walls. Ask for contractor grade paint for a discounted price but first check the mistint bin for possible colors, sometimes these are free. For furniture, try to buy upholstered pieces that have been floor samples for big discounts and look to second hand wood pieces for tables, dining chairs and shelving, refinishing or painting them to save money. Paint your own art over second hand canvases from thrift stores keeping in mind you can upgrade later. The important part is to remember is that you should have a plan for a cohesive look but you don’t need to do it all at once. Decide your priorities and keep your big pieces neutral so you can fill in with color options that arise while bargain hunting. Check those clearance shelves and be patient. [who]

We were not on a supertight budget, but bought plantation-style blinds for every window in our home anyway. They can be bought very reasonably at places like Home Depot. They look nice. We thought about putting up drapes on top of them, but they look so nice, that we have left them as standalone window coverings.

We also put down laminate wood flooring throughout our home, instead of carpet. It is a lot cleaner, and easier to keep than carpet. [who]

As said above, thrift stores are great! Also, take things you have now and make them work. Spray paint can do wonders. Remove pictures from frames and cut some out of magazines and replace them.Take trow pillows, put in pillow cases and close them with decorative pins.
Not sure what stores you have in your area but Big Lots,Ollie’s,Dollar General,Family Dollar and Dollar Tree are great [who]
