Doing some home remodeling something fell on my fingernail and cut it in half – how does it regrow?

Doing some home remodeling something fell on my fingernail and cut it in the middle from one side to the other – so it cut it in half so that there is a bottom half (above cuticle sp?) and a top half. how will it regrow? will the bottom half grow over the top? will the top half fall off eventually? will they mend back together? thanks!
