Last year, I bought a small home on a couple lots. Estimated value was $5000 more than I paid for it. Only been paying for a year so not much “Equity” in it, but I’ve discovered that it needs quite a bit of work. How do I go about getting financing for a remodel/repair?

raddsp asked:

I have a home in Manchester Tn and we have been slowly remodeling the home. It is about 2100 sq ft of living space. Our normal electric bill is about 150 a month. We would like to add some solar panels to the home to help reduce the amount of the bill. How many panels do I need and what would be the cost? I am not trying to go completely of the grid but I would like to start somewhere and maybe over the years be able to add. What is your recommendation for a reasonable cost of under 2 to 3 k??

Remodel home or build new home?

My family has grown too big for our small home. We have been discussing remodeling our home and adding an addition on with more rooms. However, our home is a 1970 modular home and is in bad shape. In the remodeling process we have to put on a new roof, replace all the windows, and do something about the mold in the floor and walls. The thing is we still owe about $50,000 on our home. What should we do? Remodel the existing home and add an addition OR build a new home and tear down the old one?

Think you for your responses, yes their pricing is weird. It is not the pricing that makes me angry it is the quality of work you get from their subcontractors that erks me. Lowes subcontractors vary so much in the quality of service it should be unlawful.

I am currently thinking about remodeling my home (built in 1941) and removing plaster walls and replacing them with drywall/sheetrock. A friend has said that if I remove the plaster walls, that the value of the house will drop. Has anyone heard this and if so, why would that be when I’m improving the home.

Remodeling our new home, what were these people thinking?!

Ali B asked:

My fiance, son and I are considering buying a house that was foreclosed on in the middle of them remodeling. It’s a 3 bedroom, and the room that is closest to the family room they tore down the top half of the wall and were making an attempt to put a bar in (we think). Anyhow, they put a hole in the hardwood floor and built a staircase leading to the basement and it takes up more than half of what was once the 3rd bedroom. I don’t know how to cover the hole back up and put the stairs in another place that would allow us to rebuild the 3rd bedroom back to it’s original size! The space where the stairs are is roughly 4×5 feet and all of the floors are hardwood. We plan to carpet the whole house if we choose to get it though. Does anyone know how you would essentially put the floor back into where it used to be? And how costly it would be? I don’t even know where to begin! Thanks!

When you’re having a home modeler renovate a house, what form do you use for the estimate?

Candidus asked:

I have a blank Form 515 Sumary of Estimate with the itemized reverse. Is this adequate for home remodelling or renovation? Or should I use some other form for getting a contractor’s estimate on the work and materials? Please advise me.
The work is quite extensive. It includes roofing, flooring, and many things inbetween.

Ducting on a older home home remodel. Can you simply block off a duct to a section of the house?

camrenalexis2 asked:

I have a older house w/newer ducting for heat/ac. The ducting was routed under the kitchen counter and there was a section cut out of a cabinet (kickboard) to release the air. I’m curious if I can simply block off the duct work? or should I go thru the hasle of cutting out the new flooring? I’ve had to pull out all the flooring on 1/2 the kitchen to repair dryrot issues so access is still easy. I dont think having this one register out of the loop would really affect the house much but I guess thats why I’m asking.
Should I have the ducting simply blowing into the bottom of the cabinet? and then putting on a grate or something similar on the front kickboard to release pressure?
