Completely remodeling a home?

My boyfriend and I just bought our first house.
& the people we bought from, starting tearing out the guts of the house because they wanted to remodel, but in the end they just didn’t have the time or money to do so.

So I’m basically looking at a blank slate, and looking for ideas online as of right now.

    Make sure to check this site out. It is a local ‘want ads’ online. You probably already know about it but it is a great resource. When you get there click on materials to find inexpensive options for materials you will need to remodel.

    BEFORE you do anything…
    Sit down and make a plan. Do the whole Phase One, Phase Two, Phase Three…. and so on.
    First things first. Get the necessities taken care of right off the bat, but have a plan, and a budget put together for the whole project. This means you need to have a time budget AND a financial budget. Then, break the budget down into segments of time and money for each project. Review your progress daily. Both of you sit down daily to reassess the budget, and your progress, to make sure you are on task and on budget at ALL times.

    Communicate positively with each other and don’t allow yourselves to become overwhelmed. Have a plan in place for what to do when you DO become overwhelmed.

    Find an inexpensive handyman that can stop by and work for an hourly wage doing the small things to keep you both sane as you remodel. One extra set of hands is a great thing to help give you time to focus on the bigger picture and not get bogged down in the details. For example, have him stop by on Tuesdays and Thursdays and have a list of stuff for him to do so he/she will be ready to get busy and get things done without a bunch of standing around.

    For jobs that need a pro with a license, such as electrical, get a bid from three different people, then pick the one you feel most comforatable with. Cheapest is not always the best. Get someone who you know will do it right the first time. That is ALWAYS the cheapest route.

    Make sure that the colors and style flow throughout the entire home. You don’t want the home to look chopped up and have each room look like it belongs in another home. Pick a color scheme and style that will be complimentary from room to room and tie the home together. [who]
